the April day

It is still a sweater season for me. A couple sweater laying around, one hanging in the back of the dining table chair, one behind the studio chair and another one in the corner of the storage room. I am cold! The gloomy and rainy days never bring much of the warmth to the apartment and the space heater is on and off as I need it and the sweaters, too!

I have been sipping tea throughout the days alone and ask Siri to turn on Pandora for me. Maybe today you are sipping tea with me as you read alone...

Summer of 1997, I flown over 23 hours flight and landed in Gateway airport, Sioux City, Iowa. I remember sobbed through of my first flight to Japan, then cried and sobbed through my second flight to Minneapolis, America. I sured the lady who sat next to me was trying to ask, are you ok? But my head was covered under a blanket and tried to avoid any contact with strangers. That was my first time away from home and first time not being able to go home, like tomorrow. On my third flight to Sioux City, I was exhausted! Never has anyone tell me that America is so far way. I vivid remember that was the first time I saw the farmlands below my eye view,;so close and felt an arm reachable distance. The engine noise was just right next to my ears and there were just 10 of us on that flight.

Late summer nights in Iowa was cold for me! I remember I was already wearing sweaters and jackets that I brought with me from home ( cold days didn't come till late October back home). Sadly they all shrank in the dryer after the first self-service laundry that I done in Swope Hall's (the dormitory) basement where I lived and done the laundry for 4 and half years. After labor day weekend, things just got browner, colder and drier on trees, grounds, and air. My sister took me to the shopping mall for the first time during our fall break. She brought me a real nice and expensive snow coat because I never experienced what snow is like before the October 31st of 1997; the snow coat was white with black patches around the elbows.  I wore that for 4 years and finally it had holes in a couple spots and it was not white anymore, it was yellowish after couple washes that I've done. My sister also got me a few sweaters, and she told me people wear hoodies and sweatshirts here. So I picked a couple of these to try out, and I love these since the day one I put them on, so does my S.

Before school started, Mary (our advisor) took us running for getting our social security, banking, errands and making sure that we are in a good transition into the new school year. I don't remember all the details in the bank that day, all I remember was bring home a large binder according to the banker that is where I will save all the monthly bank statements that the bank will send to my school address. And I signed lots documents; honestly I didn't know what I was signing for at the age of 18. I should know better, I should have had, but I didn't! People were all smiling, taking time helping out and everyone (new students) was doing the same thing. So my first checking account opened!

A few weeks later, I received a white box with my name and school address on and wondered who sent me the box, but it was always excited to received something in the school mailbox, even flyers from school clubs and commercial mails ( later on I learned it is called junk mail and short name for it is junk). I took it back to Swope and open it! It was my very first personal checkbooks and a registration book came along with it.  It felt so special! It probably had meant to a growing up teen is really going to be responsible to manage the financial independently for the first time. That Friday night, we ( students from oversea) sat at the Swope kitchen and show and tell our own checkbook. We couldn't help because we each pick out a cute design at the bank that day and that took a long time to decide on. My Japanese fellows kept saying kawaii, kawaii! Yes, they were kawaii (cute and sweet)!

On that following Monday, Veronica, my ESL teacher gave us a mini lesson on; "how to write a proper check" and how to record on registration book. So, I practiced how to write checks the next four years in every shopping that I have done, even with a payment of two dollars at a small town Walmart.  Before I could really trust the electronic payment, that was the payment option I asked the cashier to ring me up.

Soon, debit card came along and that probably have had saved half of the checks I wrote and saved some dollars on ordering new checks. I miss seeing my fancy signature in the check front, I still write checks for payments now and then.  These days, I still carry my checkbooks with me, maybe it is not a fashionable payment anymore, but it always makes me feel fancy with my fancy signature on.  All that helpful bankers have became people who I know so well throughout the year, they call my first name when they hear my Hello through the phone or step in the bank!  I couldn't help these memories that spark to me these days and have a good laugh at myself. Yes, there were mistakes in writing checks; wrong dollar amount maybe had once made 20 dollars into 20 cents, wrong name spelled, and wrong date on! The things that never went wrong was my fancy signature in the check front.

So, the new floor lamp is on every night this week. What a differences it makes? I love that warmer light brings to me at the night while I study, add on few hand stitches, and read through few pages of the new book. I trust it will bring many good warm light to me next many nights and lighted place where I set my down time alone at nights.

I didn't have a very successful time to set up a mini light studio in the living room this week. The light comes in from the west window and I have to catch the light between  2-3p.m. or it dismiss. I struggled getting good light source and tried east side window as well as we don't have either north or south side options. Once I have found the good lighting spot, the sunlight has shifted and it is a game change for the day. Guess it always rains on the next day as I schedule it for the next day agenda and I have patiently waited for the sunny day and it came! I have done a big photo shooting this week and shown to Fifi and received two thumbs up!  That tickles me...

The wooden labels are officially added on to the patchworks. It felt really special and just like my fancy signature at the check front, but this time is the signature for my patchwork handmade. I love how it turns out and feel responsible for the work I designed and crafted. It is a promise! Lost labor of love in stitching and crafting projects and onto the final stage, meeting the audience. I say it is my obsession on what I truly love to do and makes me happy in thinking this roller coaster rides that I am on now.

I have break down my day and the week now; commit to myself on the daily/weekly agendas. This week, I focus on how to speak confidently and assured myself not rumbling through as I get nervous on questions that I have been asked. I get myself into critical thinking and writes pros and cons on my notebooks and added on a post-it on the page of the book that inspired me and go back to read the it again. I take time to sew and enjoy the conversation between fabrics and I time. I called Carol when I feel a heavy day hit on my shoulders and just need a talk; she is always there for me.  I window shopping when I need a little break from study, from more floor lamps, new dining table, new sewing machines,  soon to be release fabrics. They are all look terrific to me and have add to the shopping cart, just in case and the possibilities!

I look for a day to travel into the city and seeing all the flower blooming in the Battery Park and Central Park. A cuppa coffee would be luxury and relaxing in the walk (We always walk from downtown to uptown; sore legs, but amazing and refreshing to the soul) . I am anxious going to garment district seeing and touching all the fancy trims and fabrics, it has been too long! That will be another story to share when the day comes.

*** My contribution to 50 Little Gifts on the Window Zippered Pouch. I am late to the party due the family. It is a book that fills with great ideas for making cute handmade gifts. So many talented sewers have contributed to the book.   I am so honored having a project in a published book. Thank you to the publisher Susanne who has reaching out to me and trust of my work.

*** A few handmade items have added to the Shop; the cute dumpling pouches that made with sweet and precious fabric scraps.  Lovely penny square patchwork cases that are hand-quilted in cotton weight and linen fabric. Townsquare Pillow Sewing Pattern

Hello! Welcome to my newest PDF sewing pattern, {Townsquare Pillow Sewing Pattern}. This pattern is done before the summer arrived, but with all the traveling that I planned to do with papa it had to get postpone with photo shooting and editing as well. I also want to be able to write about this pattern's idea and inspirations before it releases to the world.

So, welcome to {Townsuare Pillow Sewing pattern} and welcome to quarter inch mark townsquare!  The pattern inspirations came to me during last Christmas time as I had pleasure walking around streets and avenues in the new to me neighborhood that I had just moved in.  I discovered how each house, street is alike a little townsquare with its little charm and later on during my traveling time on the bus, on/off different subway stops and streets. Soon, I knew I want design a pattern that brings comfort and remembrance of the townsquare that I have visited and you might have visited or live in one.

I've lived in many little towns, somewhat big cities, and now resident in the big apple city.  I've always noticed each town and city has its own characters. I've slowly discovered these characters are what bringing people together; similar backgrounds, close aged groups, newly started families and some are in close culture background. Because of these characteristics they bring people together and these connections are forming into a little townsquare, where they could support each other, find comfort to resident in the neighborhood, and start growing their roots down.

My time in the city might be short, but I love watch and walk around different streets and districts. Nothing better than just seeing places in my own eyes and telling stories that I encounter dialy. There are so many little townquares around here. In the city, I found most of the townsquares are formed by the different ethnicity groups. Around the Woodside, Queens, you can find large group of Hispanic families, grocery stores, restaurants. I just love walking in that place, it brings me to a different space and the common language to say is not English is a good smile! and lots gracias and hola!

Right around the end of Northern Boulevard, Queens. There is a huge Korean townsquare, which I just enjoyed so much for the spicy food ingredients and the billboard writings that I'll never know what do they mean. They've always spoken Korean to me whenever I check out my grocery shopping and it is always kamsa-hamnida.

In Williamsburg, Brooklyn is where the young and little chic boutiques and trendy cafes are surrounded. If I am another 10 years younger, I'd be living in that little townsquare where I might be hanging out with all the dreamers who move to city with big dreams and goals to fulfill!

I really love the characters of each townsquare, no matter where I have lived or been.  I so enjoy seeing the beauty of the core value of the place, not the fancy kind, but the simple and down to earth kind of places.  I so believe the charm of townsquare has that special attractive characters to you and I in a way. I wanted to bring all these ideas and inspirations into one comfort project and share with you all.

and Townsquare Pillow is just the perfect project to design and transform these little factors, charms and stories I shared into one; comfort and unique. Unlike other pattern, this pattern is alike writing a quilt pattern, which is fun and so much diagrams that I drew on Illustrator. I purposely had design how the back seamallows foldingfrom each other to create the patchwork front look. It took a good time to decided on pop up the square or let the square sits inside.

I sincerely hope when you purchase patterns from me, it is clear and comes with good/clear photos to support your sewing journey as some of us are visual learners and other might not. It is important to me to write a good instructions and provided good illustrations as well.

About the Townsquare Pillow Cover-

I used 40 plus prints for making one Townsquare Pillow cover ( used 60 plus print for scrappy patchwork style). The idea is working with the colors and create homey cohesive balance using varies prints.

Did you know each little square window could be play in with fabric fussy cuts as well. Can you picture a fussy chef in the townsquare block cooking? a Fussy cut little sleepy girl within the window? or little oven that is working on? so on.  It is your townsquare, so be creative and be happy! There are endless warm and charm that you can bring to your little square.

For the quilting:

Feel free of creating your own quilting pattern, I used really simple lines that 0.25" apart from each other and used walking food to create the good effect. The earthy tone townsquare pillow is purely hand quilted! I know that trying both is important, so I could share the difference.

** With the machine quilting, you'll find your quilting time is shorter and the line effect is just simple and create much modern clean look to the patchwork top. I simple love that straight-line looks and modern, clean cut finish.

** With the hand quilting, the quilting time is add on, but really it is labor of love! I love hand quilting small stitches on any patchwork project if possible. I love the additional hand touch to the work. It gives extra finish of the work and the charm of vintage finish.

Weekending + knit + tiny patchwork

It's kinda off the grid week here! I haven't really had time to sit down and sew, sew, sew, but did finished the patchworking that I've been working on early the week.  I was racing with the clock this entire week. oh, then had a little bummer news!

Late Tuesday afternoon, the intercom was buzzed! It was the mail carrier (gotta love that gentleman for the extra effort). The backing fabric for the birthday quilt came (yay)! As I raced downstair to pick up the package then quickly raced to upstair to open up the package and soon realized that it is wrong fabric ( oh, NO!! +catch my breath ) That moment I though I had ordered the wrong print??  Before reached out to the customer service, I had double check on the order mail. Ok, quickly I got on the phone and was able to talked to the customer service. I had described the print received; the design, the colors, and the company. Then the lady who was on the phone told me I could keep the fabric and they will soon mail out a replacement. You know, I had suddenly felt that I am richer by 5 yards of fabric, um.. What to do with them??  Honestly, I didn't know what to do! I waited two days later and made two pillow cases and still have plenty yardage for something else, any suggestions? The replacement will be here, next week and you know where I'll be!

As I though I didn't want or need anything for birthday this year, I actually received my pre-order yarn this week as well. I had placed a pre-order weeks ago and totally forget about this! In back of my mind, I knew I was expecting something, but didn't remember what was it! Gosh, my brain!  These beautiful fingering weighted yarn from House of a la mode is going to become a shawl, someday!  I also ordered a DK weighted to accompanied the other DK weighted yarn. I really love wrapping scarf during the winter season and shawls are just so perfect for me! So far, I really enjoy working with DK weighted yarn!

The Honey Cowl is off the needles last weekend. Right away, I casted on a new cowl, it is alike basket wave. I did knit 5 purl 5, repeat pattern. Not sure if I am doing the right knitting pattern, but I love how it is coming along! It will need few more waves before cast off. I plan on knitting another Honey cowl as soon as the basket wave cowl off needles! It is SO additive and I am getting so comfortable with stitches now!

I have got some new toys needles this week. As I shopped I realized there are so many knitting accessories!!! These needles are for socks knitting! I have been study the socks pattern and though I should jump in rather than study! Oh, the sock pattern I am going for is Rye.  I am actually excited about casting on first sock as I have my eyes on so many pretty yarn and before I dive into yarn-wonderland. I do need to be more skillful for all that prettiness!

I've been knitting a lot lately! These cowls knitting keep me so satisfied! It takes two week to knit one ! Few rows a night and eventually I have them all shape up! I have a list of cowls that I like to knit up and few more shawl patterns to try. I really need to find my time back to sewing once I get that birthday quilt done I should feel so good about it!

Oh, this coming week is going to be a exciting week for me (caught, caught). I will be turning another year old (oh my!) So much to share with you, but would have to wait after blow the candle! For the little celebration, the {Etsy shop} and {Craftsy shop} is marked 30% off on all patterns, no coupon code needed! The promotion will run till October 13th, 9p.m. EST.

Patchwork the Travel Outbound Bag

There is a small pile of hand quilted patchwork panels that I have done and saved over the years and continue adding to the pile. I've always jump right in new ideas and start sewing. Then take up tremendous time to hand-quilting the pieces. Over the time, I probably walk away most of initial ideas then drop everything and moved on! These are not quite abandon pieces, probably just needed some good motivation push to complete them.  Lately I've getting some new ideas and working through them as I go.

These two tiny patchwork panels finished in an odd measurement 8.25"x4.5". It won't fit well into an 8" nor a 6" zipper. Between these two sizes would be the size 7" zipper and it would really be just right size! However, size 7" is not an usual zipper size that I used around here, so had acquired new zippers for them.

When I first designed the {Travel Outbound Bag Sewing Pattern}, I had an in-between idea/ decision on making the pattern into a patchwork style or keep the sewing panels simple. It was a challenging call at the time {as I heart patchworking so much},  but I knew for traveling that things will get wear up quickly, so final call was using linen and linen cotton blended fabrics.

But you know what? I've been curious about how the {Travel Outbound Bag} would look like in the patchwork style! It was just something that I've always wanted to make one, but not finding the time to actually sit down for the process of making.

After going through the box, I found these two patchwork panels were actually perfectly for making a patchwork style {Travel Outbound Bag}! The only change that made was sewing with a patchwork exterior pockets instead of one piece cloth.  I've also changed the rivet set into a snap set which allows to open up the front exterior pockets (both side) then added a little leather for extra embellishment/ design look.

I am excited that finally filled up my curiosity after publishing the pattern. It is the kind of patchwork style that I had pictured in my mind {all this time} and it gives more versatile look, probably the patchwork love in me!  I can't wait to make a second patchwork style Travel Outbound Bag, I can't go wrong with all the tiny stitches {smile}.

Travel Outbound Bag Sewing Pattern is available via my {Etsy} and {Craftsy} pattern store.
Hand quilting tutorial is {here}

Meanwhile, I have some patchworking fun coming next week! I can't wait to show you more!

Boathouse Pouch Sewing Pattern

Happy Mid-Summer! I am super excited to have my newest PDF sewing pattern, Boathouse Pouch release during the mid-summer days.  I've been working on the pouch concepts since early spring and created a few prototypes before finalized the pouch shape and best way to approach Boathouse Pouch sewing techniques.

Oh, Boathouse Pouch, you ask? This is such a cute pouch and comes with great divider spaces that you'll want to give it a go!

Growing up, I’ve spent much of my summer time at my grandparents’ old red brick house that was an hour's drive away from the city I used to live. Playing in the rice field, feeding cows, catching frogs, walking barefoot in creeks, and getting in trouble by picking the neighbor’s fruits. There was a lot of outdoor activities to do during the summer time in the rural countryside; plenty dirt and mud time.

Origami (folding paper) seemed to be the most popular craft at the time for us, kids. Grandma would sent us outdoor with a stack of newspaper that she got from the open market. My siblings and I’d fold a lot of newspaper boats and float them down the creek that resided near the brick house. We bet on who's boat would reach the end of first rock and we all screamed for our own boat to win- boat game!

{Boathouse Pouch Sewing Pattern} is an origami paper boat folding inspired pouch! This pouch has quite a few folding and turning concepts involved within the pouch design. Summer day fun and a bit of tricky and challenging sewing pattern. Nothing very difficult, just like origami, fold and turn.

Let me talk a little bit about the Boathouse Pouch.

Boathouse Pouch is based and inspired by origami (paper folding) boat folding concept. As a pattern designer, I want to keep the originality of the folding boat shape and work around the measurements to suit for the pouch turning and folding technique. The pouch comes with great divider space, which have three compartments to store personal essentials.

On the photo (above), is the size 7", which is perfectly for sewing tools, stationary.  I've set my paper piecing tools, papers, spools of thread in one of boathouse pouch which comes really handy and nothing falls out the pouch.

I also love how this pouch design shows the original boathouse concept. Within the PDF sewing pattern will show you how you can sew use different fabric to sew the boat base in a different outlook. You'll be surprised how easy the tricks are and fun ideas can be play in sewing pouches.

Sew the zipper with no fears like every zippered sewing pouch pattern. Within the pattern there are step-by-step colored photos to guild you through each steps. There are a number of pages on how to attach zippers for the pouch, so you can visually see how it actually works.

For the size 6" zipper: The small scale Boathouse Pouch has been a perfect size pouch for a quick run to the stores. Maybe petty cash, metro cards, or few coins in the pouch. The middle compartment is perfect for "cards"(Ex: business card, credit card, metro card, etc.)

The center compartment comes slightly smaller then the two side compartments. It is originally designed for storing small items. Perfect for items that you like to keep separate from others.

On the two side compartments, it allows you to store bigger objects. (Ex: UBS cards, lip stick, ear phone device, etc.) As you can image, the bottom of the boat expands and gives nice space. It's also perfect for storing needle packs, glue sticks, and rotary blade packs, use it as a sewing aid pouch!

For the 7" pouch, that you will be able to fit quite a bit of sewing essentials. As the picture shows you, there's a pair of small hand scissors, a small rotary cutter, needle book and few spools of thread can be all fit in this size of Boathouse Pouch.

With all the tools are zipped in the Boathouse Pouch, you'll find that there's rooms for other tools. Both sides of the pouch gives you a nice roomy space.
